Caleb Flynn sentenced to life without parole for wife's murder

Caleb Flynn, a former American Idol contestant, was sentenced on Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murdering his wife, Ashley, the maximum possible sentence (CNN, Cincinnati Enquirer).

Miami County Common Pleas Judge Jeannine Pratt handed down the sentence at a hearing on 5 October. Flynn, 40, also received nine years for tampering with evidence and seven years for firearm enhancements, to be served consecutively to the life term (CNN).

A jury convicted Flynn on 29 September after about two and a half hours of deliberations at the end of a trial that began on 17 September, in which prosecutors argued he shot Ashley, 37, at their Tipp City, Ohio, home on 16 February and staged the scene to look like a burglary (Cincinnati Enquirer). Prosecutors also said he was having an affair with a fellow worship leader and sent her a text message the night before the killing saying he was “free” (CNN, USA Today).

Before sentencing, Flynn tearfully maintained his innocence, saying: “I did not kill my wife.” Statements from his two young daughters were read aloud in court, with the girls asking their father how he could do such a thing and saying they do not plan to visit him in prison (USA Today, AP).

Flynn appeared on the 12th season of American Idol in 2013 but did not advance to the main competition in Hollywood (AP).
