Macklin Celebrini, 20, named youngest captain in Sharks history

The San Jose Sharks named 20-year-old Macklin Celebrini team captain on Friday, making him the youngest captain in franchise history.

The San Jose Sharks named Macklin Celebrini as team captain on Friday, Sept. 25, 2026, making the 20-year-old the youngest captain in franchise history, Reuters reported.

Celebrini, the 2024 No. 1 overall pick, becomes the Sharks’ first captain since Logan Couture retired on April 15, 2025, and their 11th full-time captain. Hockey Hall of Famer and former Sharks captain Joe Thornton delivered the news in the locker room, handing Celebrini a jersey with the “C” above the heart.

The previous youngest captain in Sharks history was Patrick Marleau, who took the role at age 24 in 2004. Celebrini, who turned 20 in June 2026, is also the youngest active captain in the NHL, edging out 21-year-old Connor Bedard of the Chicago Blackhawks, the Associated Press reported.

The honour caps a remarkable second season in which Celebrini set the franchise’s single-season scoring record with 115 points — 45 goals and 70 assists in 82 games — eclipsing Thornton’s mark of 114 from 2006-07 and finishing fourth in the NHL in scoring. He has 178 points in 152 regular-season games, according to NHL.com.

The announcement comes less than two months after Celebrini signed a five-year, $94 million contract extension. “Your hard work, the way you lead our group… this is a well-deserved honor,” Sharks general manager Mike Grier told Celebrini in the team’s announcement video, USA Today reported.
