Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum dies aged 76; Dubai declares 10 days of mourning

Dubai has declared 10 days of official mourning after the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the younger brother of Dubai's Ruler, aged 76.

Dubai has declared 10 days of official mourning following the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, younger brother of Dubai’s Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The Ruler’s Court announced on Monday 21 September that Sheikh Ahmed died that morning at the age of 76, and ordered flags across the emirate to be flown at half-mast with immediate effect. No cause of death was given in the initial announcement.

Sheikh Ahmed, the Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security, was the youngest son of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Dubai’s former ruler. A graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he rose to become Commander-in-Chief of Dubai’s Central Military Command before a long career in the emirate’s security establishment. He chaired A.R.M. Holding and the Dubai Real Estate Centre and was closely connected with Al Wasl Sports Club.

He was also a significant figure in international racing, campaigning Group 1 winners including the 1983 Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Wassl and the dual Eclipse and King George winner Mtoto. Godolphin paid tribute to him as “a simply outstanding owner and breeder” whose contribution to the sport “will be felt for many years to come”.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted condolences on X, writing that he was “deeply saddened by the passing of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum” and conveying condolences to the royal family and the people of Dubai.
