Gwyneth Paltrow is set to star in The Apology, a new A24 series for Netflix, with the streamer handing the project a straight two-season order, multiple trade reports confirmed on Monday.

The Oscar winner will play Evelyn Amspoker, a woman whose son was murdered 18 years ago in a case that captivated the nation. When Evelyn and her husband Caleb learn the killer may receive a reduced sentence, the couple decide to take matters into their own hands. According to the logline, justice finally seems possible when a stranger confesses — until the prospect of a reduced sentence forces the couple to act.

Deadline first reported the news, revealing Netflix bought the project preemptively after a competitive negotiation. The series comes from creator, showrunner and writer Joe Murtagh, known for The Woman in the Wall, with Thomas Vinterberg — the Danish filmmaker behind Another Round — set to direct.

It will be Paltrow’s first time leading a television series. She previously appeared on Netflix in two seasons of The Politician and in the unscripted The Goop Lab; she also had an Emmy-winning guest role as Holly Holliday on Glee. The Playlist notes Deadline described this as her first series regular role.

Paltrow, Murtagh, Vinterberg and Joe Hipps of Cut To will executive produce. No additional casting, production dates or premiere window have been announced.
