Karan Johar announces Season 9 of Koffee With Karan will be the show's last

Karan Johar has announced that Season 9 of his celebrity chat show Koffee With Karan will be its final chapter, ending a 22-year run across eight seasons and 161 episodes, with the last season streaming on JioHotstar from October 14.

Filmmaker Karan Johar has announced that Season 9 of his celebrity chat show Koffee With Karan will be its final season, bringing the show to an end after 22 years, eight seasons and 161 episodes. He shared the news on September 30 in an emotional video posted to Instagram, captioned: “I think we need to talk. Over Koffee, of course. Hotstar Specials: Koffee with Karan Season 9, streaming 14th October onwards on JioHotstar.”

In the video, Johar traced the show back to a conversation with his late father, producer Yash Johar, in June 2004. “I really want to host a talk show,” Johar said, quoted by IANS. His father replied: “Karan, you’re going to call your friends, chat with them. You do that every day. Who is going to pay to do that?” Yash Johar died on June 26, 2004; Johar said the first day he shot the show was August 16, 2004.

Speaking about the decision, Johar said, “There are some journeys you don’t plan to end, you simply know, somewhere deep within you, when it is time to let them go.” He said the next decade of his life would be spent directing films, according to Times Now.

The final season premieres on October 14 on JioHotstar. Alok Jain, Head of Hindi and English Entertainment Business at JioStar, said the show had given audiences “an intimate, irreverent, and often unexpected glimpse into the lives of the people they love watching” for over two decades. The show first aired on Star World in 2004, with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol as its first guests, and moved to streaming in 2022.
