Michael Flatley's wife Niamh O'Brien dies aged 52 after "period of illness"

Lord of the Dance star Michael Flatley has announced the death of his wife Niamh O'Brien, aged 52, who passed peacefully at Beacon Hospital in Dublin following a period of illness.

Niamh O’Brien, the wife of Lord of the Dance star Michael Flatley, has died aged 52, her husband announced on social media on Monday.

Flatley shared the news on Instagram, writing: “My heart is broken. I have lost my beautiful wife, Niamh, and my best friend.”

A representative said Niamh passed peacefully at the Beacon Hospital in Dublin “following a period of illness”, thanking the hospital’s doctors, nurses and staff who had cared for her. The family asked that their privacy be respected, and funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.

Niamh, originally from Co Meath, was a celebrated Irish dancer who played the lead role of Saoirse in Flatley’s Lord of the Dance shows, appeared in Riverdance’s famous 1994 Eurovision interval line-up, and also performed in Celtic Tiger. The couple first met on the set of Riverdance and married in 2006 at St Patrick’s Church in Fermoy, Co Cork. Their only child, son Michael Saint James, was born in 2007.

Tributes poured in from Ireland’s entertainment world, including actress Victoria Smurfit, who wrote: “She was beauty inside and out.” Flatley’s sister Thomasina Griffin added: “The sweetest kindest sister in law anyone could ever ask for.”
