Rani Mukerji's mother Krishna Mukerji dies at 75 in Mumbai

Krishna Mukerji, the mother of Bollywood actor Rani Mukerji, has died in Mumbai at the age of 75, the family announced on Tuesday afternoon.

“With heavy hearts, we share that Rani Mukerji’s mother Mrs Krishna Mukerji, 75, passed away this afternoon. The family is deeply grateful for your love, prayers, and support, and respectfully requests privacy during this time of immense grief,” the family said in a statement issued through Yash Raj Films. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Her last rites were held at the Pawan Hans Crematorium in Juhu, attended by a host of film industry figures. Aamir Khan was seen arriving to offer condolences, alongside Shah Rukh Khan, actress Alia Bhatt and filmmaker Karan Johar, the Times of India reported.

Krishna Mukerji worked as a playback singer and had links to the Bengali film industry; her sister is Bengali film star Debashree Roy. She married filmmaker Ram Mukerji — one of the founders of Filmalaya Studios, who directed Hum Hindustani (1960) and Leader (1964) — in 1972. Ram Mukerji, who directed and produced Rani’s Bengali debut Biyer Phool in 1996, died in October 2017 at the age of 84. The couple had two children: Rani and her elder brother, film producer Raja Mukerji.
