Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence on his walkout from Portugal’s training camp, accusing coach Jorge Jesus of twice breaking his word over his treatment during the Nations League window.

In a lengthy statement released on Tuesday night, Ronaldo said Jesus had agreed he would skip the Norway and Denmark matches to manage his fitness — but on the day of the Norway game the coach told him he would play 30 minutes. “I warmed up from halftime onwards, watched the minutes tick by and wasn’t called on,” Ronaldo said.

A later meeting with Jesus — attended by Al Nassr sporting director Simao Coutinho — produced an agreement that the coach would clarify events at his press conference; an eight-point document stated Ronaldo had never demanded playing time. Ronaldo said Jesus’s public remarks bore no resemblance to their private discussion. “It was the second time he had broken his word to me. I decided to leave the training camp.”

Ronaldo left the camp before Portugal’s Nations League match against Denmark last week, and has apologised to his team mates and supporters, saying the federation must punish him. “I am not just any player; I am the team captain, and that constitutes an aggravating factor.”

He insisted he is not retiring from international football: if fit and playing for his club, he will be available after any punishment, promising “one or more farewell matches”.

Jesus, the Portugal coach, denied any agreement but left the door open for his return.
