Israel's UN envoy offers Starlink terminal to Iranian diplomat at UNGA — and is ignored

Israel's UN Ambassador Danny Danon approached an Iranian diplomat on the UN General Assembly floor on Thursday and offered him a Starlink satellite internet device; the diplomat, identified as Nasser Asadi, ignored him and did not accept it.

Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, approached an Iranian diplomat on the UN General Assembly floor on Thursday and tried to hand him a Starlink satellite internet terminal. The Iranian representative ignored him and did not accept the device.

The diplomat was identified as Nasser Asadi, a member of Iran’s UN mission. Danon told him: “Take the Starlink to Tehran. It could be very useful for you in Iran, helping the Iranian people gain their freedom,” adding: “We love the Iranian people and pray for regime change. That day will come.” Danon later posted on social media: “The Iranian representative didn’t want the starlink :(”.

It was the same device Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had displayed during his UN address earlier on Thursday. Netanyahu said he intended to leave the device with the Iranian delegation so that, in his words, “when they inevitably defect, they’ll be able to tell their story on social media.” He framed the device as a way for Iranians to bypass internet censorship: “This is a communications device that enables people to access the truth. That is what the Iranian regime fears.”

Iran imposed a months-long internet blackout in January 2026 in response to widespread protests; the blackout was officially ended in late May. The incident is separate from Thursday’s delegate walkout during Netanyahu’s address, which Flip News reported yesterday.
