Vietjet signs Starlink deal for free in-flight Wi-Fi across 120 aircraft
Vietjet has signed a strategic partnership with SpaceX's Starlink to bring free high-speed Wi-Fi to 120 aircraft, the deal exchanged in New York during Vietnam's presidential US visit.
Vietnamese budget airline Vietjet has signed a strategic partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink to bring free, high-speed in-flight Wi-Fi to its fleet, with the agreement exchanged in New York on 23 September during General Secretary and President To Lam’s working visit to the United States.
The deal was signed by Vietjet together with its group companies Galaxy Holdings and Galaxy Telecom, and witnessed by senior officials and business leaders from both countries. In the initial phase, Starlink will be installed on 120 Vietjet aircraft — 100 Airbus A321 and Boeing 737 jets alongside 20 Airbus A330 wide-bodies — with all future aircraft deliveries also to be equipped. Vietjet says passengers will get complimentary access on all Vietjet-branded flights across its domestic and international network.
Nikkei Asia reports Vietjet is the first company to announce a business contract with Starlink since the satellite internet provider entered Vietnam last month. The deal builds on an initial agreement the carrier signed with Starlink Services Vietnam in May. Vietjet’s board had already approved a VND250 billion (about $10 million) injection into its Galaxy Pay unit in August to help fund the Starlink infrastructure.
Vietjet chairwoman Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao said that “with Starlink, time in the air no longer has to mean time offline”, while SpaceX senior vice-president Tim Hughes said the service would build on Starlink’s existing connections to homes and businesses on the ground in Vietnam. Starlink uses a low-earth-orbit network to provide high-speed, low-latency connectivity, including over oceans and remote areas.
