Zelensky says Starlink speed limits grounding Ukraine's interceptor drones, rejecting 'technical issues' claim
Volodymyr Zelensky said Saturday that Ukraine's interceptor drones 'are not operating' because of speed restrictions on Starlink services — and that tests of Starlink on EU territory showed the claimed 'technical issues' did not exist there.
The Ukrainian military was unable to use its interceptor drones against Russian drone attacks on Saturday because of speed restrictions placed on services provided by satellite company Starlink, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
“Today, our interceptor drones are not operating because of speed limitations,” Zelensky said. He said Ukraine had been told that the speed restrictions had been caused by technical issues — but that tests of Starlink on the territory of the European Union had shown there were no such issues there.
The reduction in services provided by the satellite company interrupted communications with headquarters and caused internet speeds to drop, according to the report.
US President Donald Trump said on Friday he did not think either he or Elon Musk — whose company SpaceX developed the Starshield system used by Ukraine’s military — was responsible for Ukraine losing Starlink access in a way that affected its military operations against Russia.
Zelensky also said that Ukraine, the United States and Russia could meet during the Group of 20 summit in Miami in December, though he stressed there had been no confirmation from either Washington or Moscow, and that the meeting could instead take place in a European or Middle Eastern country — noting the US had mentioned the United Arab Emirates or Saudi Arabia. Zelensky said Ukrainian negotiators had spoken to US officials on Friday but gave no other details.
