Rain washes out final Phillip Island MotoGP as Marquez's title lead stays at 10 points

The final Australian MotoGP at Phillip Island was cancelled on Sunday after persistent rain and poor visibility made racing unsafe, leaving Marc Marquez's championship lead over injured Jorge Martin at 10 points.

The final Australian MotoGP at Phillip Island was cancelled on Sunday after persistent rain and poor visibility made racing unsafe, organisers said, ending nearly three decades of racing at the circuit without a farewell grand prix.

“Limited visibility has resulted in the cancellation of the Australian MotoGP,” organisers said. The Moto3 and Moto2 races were also called off despite a sell-out crowd. AutoAction reported the premier-class race was abandoned at 3:35pm AEDT after hours of delays, with poor visibility preventing the medical helicopter from operating safely.

Saturday’s sprint, won by Marc Marquez, will go down as the final MotoGP race held at Phillip Island. The circuit has hosted the Australian Grand Prix since 1997, and the event moves to an Adelaide street circuit in 2027.

The cancellation denied Marquez the chance to stretch his championship lead over Jorge Martin, who was ruled out of the race after fracturing his forearm in a crash during Saturday’s sprint. Martin instead leaves Australia 10 points adrift of Marquez, while Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi is third, 50 points behind Marquez.

Four rounds of the season remain, starting next week in Malaysia. Whether Martin can ride at Sepang remains to be seen; Aprilia said the fracture was non-displaced and he would not need to return to Spain for surgery.
