North Carolina State has fired head football coach Dave Doeren after 14 seasons, the school announced on Saturday, less than 24 hours after a 31-28 loss at Stanford dropped the Wolfpack to 3-4.

North Carolina State has fired head football coach Dave Doeren after 14 seasons, the school announced on Saturday, less than 24 hours after the Wolfpack’s 31-28 loss on the road at Stanford on Friday (USA Today, Associated Press via NBC Sports).

The defeat dropped NC State to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. “I want to thank Coach Doeren for his service and contributions to NC State, and for always representing the university with pride,” athletic director Boo Corrigan said in a statement. “I appreciate his leadership during his 14-year tenure and the passion he brought to this role.”

Running backs coach and special teams coordinator Todd Goebbel will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season, and the school said a national search for Doeren’s replacement will begin immediately (Fox Sports).

Doeren leaves as the winningest coach in NC State history, with 98 wins and 11 bowl appearances across his 14 seasons. NC State is the second Power Four programme to fire its coach this season, after Maryland parted ways with Mike Locksley on 21 October. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Doeren, who had three years left on his deal, is owed $10.3 million, and that former NC State star quarterback Philip Rivers could be in the mix for the job.
