Sri Lanka chase down 430 to stun England in second-highest ODI run chase ever
Sri Lanka pulled off the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history on Thursday, overhauling England's 429-4 to win by two wickets in Rawalpindi with a ball to spare.
Sri Lanka completed the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history on Thursday, overhauling England’s 429 for 4 to win by two wickets in the Pakistan tri-series clash at Rawalpindi, scoring 430 for 8 in 49.5 overs (Sky Sports, Al Jazeera).
The chase is the second-highest in the format, behind only South Africa’s 435 against Australia at Johannesburg in 2006 (Flashscore).
After slumping to 24 for 2, Sri Lanka were rebuilt by Pavan Rathnayake’s 130 off 106 balls and Avishka Fernando’s 97 off 83, the pair adding 166 for the third wicket. Rathnayake then added 133 off 79 balls with Dasun Shanaka, whose 97 off 50 included eight sixes. Janith Liyanage finished unbeaten on 61 off 27, smashing a six off Josh Tongue off the penultimate ball with eight needed from the final over (Flashscore, CricTracker).
England’s total had been built on Harry Brook’s 202 off 116 balls — the fastest ODI double century in history and the first by an Englishman — plus Joe Root’s 69, which made him the first England batter to 8,000 ODI runs, and Will Jacks’ unbeaten 66 off 30 (Aaj News, Pakistan TV). The match aggregate of 859 runs is among the highest in ODI history (Najam Sports).
The result gives Sri Lanka their first points of the tri-series and leaves England empty-handed despite Brook’s record knock (CricTracker).
