Dream level WNBA Finals as Reese's 30-16 powers Game 2 rout of Valkyries
Angel Reese's 30-point, 16-rebound masterclass sealed the Atlanta Dream's first-ever WNBA Finals win, a 79-65 Game 2 victory over the Golden State Valkyries that levels the best-of-seven series at 1-1.
The Atlanta Dream finally have a WNBA Finals win.
Angel Reese delivered a double-double of 30 points and 16 rebounds — both game-highs — to power a 79-65 Game 2 victory over the Golden State Valkyries at Chase Center on Monday night, levelling the best-of-seven series at 1-1 and ending one of the most painful droughts in Finals history.
Atlanta had lost their previous 10 Finals games, swept in the 2010, 2011 and 2013 title rounds and beaten in Game 1 of this series. The win in front of a sold-out “Ballhalla” crowd took 11 Finals games in the making.
Reese played 34 minutes, shooting 10-of-16 from the field and 9-of-11 from the free-throw line, with three assists and two blocks. She became only the third player in league history to record at least 30 points and 15 rebounds in a Finals game, joining New York Liberty stars Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones — the pair Reese said had urged her on before the game.
“It’s funny. They told me to go get it. They told me to keep going and push through in our last game in New York. So shout out to them, but I’m just doing whatever it takes to win,” Reese said.
The Dream swept the Liberty in the semi-finals to reach the Finals for the first time since 2013. Game 3 moves to State Farm Arena in Atlanta on Wednesday.
