Deepthi Jeevanji storms to 400m T20 gold in new Asian Para Games record
Deepthi Jeevanji clocked 56.36 seconds to win the women's 400m T20 final in a new Asian Para Games record — India's fifth gold of the Games and the first of Day 2 in Nagoya.
Deepthi Jeevanji defended her Asian Para Games crown in style on Tuesday, winning the women’s 400m T20 final in a new Games record of 56.36 seconds in Nagoya.
The 23-year-old from Telangana had already signalled her intent in Monday’s heats, clocking 57.57 seconds to set a new Games record before going faster still when it mattered most. She finished comfortably ahead of Japan’s Niina Kanno, who took silver in 58.92 seconds, and Akane Kato, who claimed bronze in 1:00.26.
The gold was India’s fifth of the Games and the first of Day 2.
The T20 classification covers athletes with intellectual impairments. Jeevanji, the 2024 world champion — she set a world record of 55.07 seconds at the 2024 World Championships — is also a Paralympic bronze medallist in the event from Paris 2024, and won gold at the 2023 Asian Para Games.
