Armed police arrested a man at a migrant hotel in Bournemouth after a man was attacked with a machete in a seafront park, Dorset Police said.
Officers received a report at 12.40pm on Thursday of a man in possession of a machete in Boscombe Chine Gardens. During an altercation between two men, the attacker allegedly produced the long-bladed weapon and struck his victim on the head.
The victim was taken to hospital for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, police said. Officers made an arrest at the nearby Chine Hotel on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm, and cordoned off the area near Boscombe beach.
“There will be an increased police presence in the area while enquiries are carried out to establish the full circumstances of what happened,” a Dorset Police spokesperson said.
The Chine Hotel is one of three hotels in the Bournemouth area hired by the Home Office to house asylum seekers. The Victorian hotel, which once welcomed stars including Dame Vera Lynn and Laurel & Hardy, has been closed to the public for several years.
Police have not released further details about the men involved, and enquiries are ongoing.
