Six people smugglers jailed for manslaughter over deadliest Channel crossing
A court in Paris has convicted six men of manslaughter and sentenced seven others for their roles in the November 2021 small-boat crossing that killed 31 people, the worst Channel disaster on record.
Six men have been found guilty of manslaughter over the deadliest small-boat Channel crossing on record, in which 31 migrants died or went missing in November 2021.
The court in Paris sentenced 13 men in total on Wednesday 30 September 2026. The six convicted of involuntary homicide received prison terms of between six and 10 years. Seven others were convicted of lesser smuggling charges, including facilitating illegal immigration as part of an organised gang and criminal conspiracy, with sentences ranging from six months suspended to four years. Two of the accused were tried in absentia and one man was found innocent. The trial began in early September 2026.
The migrants had left a beach in northern France in an inflatable dinghy that prosecutors said was unfit for open-sea navigation, overloaded and lacking enough life jackets. Experts concluded its occupants had “no chance” of effectively dealing with an emergency at sea. Twenty-seven bodies were recovered; at least four others were never found. Only two men survived.
The victims were mainly Iraqi Kurds, alongside Afghans, Ethiopians, an Egyptian, a Somali national, an Iranian Kurd and a Vietnamese national. The youngest known victim was a seven-year-old girl.
The court said the six smugglers were directly or indirectly responsible for the journey, showing “complete indifference” to human life out of “sheer greed”. Members of the French military are under formal investigation for failing to help the migrants when they were in danger.
Zana Mamand Muhammad, whose 18-year-old brother Twana was never recovered, told the court: “I am living with this constant pain.”
