Twelve arrested after anti-migrant protest at Gosport small-boat landing

Twelve people were arrested after around 350 protesters gathered at Gosport marina on Sunday night as a small boat carrying an estimated 120 migrants was brought ashore escorted by two RNLI lifeboats.

Twelve people have been arrested after a crowd of around 350 gathered in Gosport, Hampshire, on Sunday night to protest against the arrival of a small boat carrying an estimated 120 migrants, police said on Monday.

Eleven men and one woman were arrested on suspicion of offences including assaulting a police officer, affray and racially aggravated public order, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said. All 12 remain in custody.

Crowds had been building near Haslar Marina from Sunday afternoon. Police blocked off roads to the marina and the boat landed at about 10pm, escorted by two RNLI lifeboats. The dinghy had left France on Sunday morning and was shadowed by French rescue vessels until it was met by the RNLI boats in English waters, according to ship-tracking data.

About 20 minutes after the migrants came ashore, tensions flared among the protesters. Red flares were set off as the crowd pushed back the line of police officers, a fight appeared to break out, and officers stood with pepper spray in hand. A small number of officers were treated at the scene for injuries, but none was seriously hurt; another person was treated for chest pains.

Assistant Chief Constable Simon Dodds said: “Last night saw a number of incidents that were clearly not peaceful protest, rather violent public disorder, and this will not be tolerated as we work to keep our wider communities in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight safe.”

The Home Office said the migrants will be taken to Kent for processing, including health, security and biometric checks. The Gosport arrivals were among 418 migrants who reached the UK on Sunday in five separate boats, taking the total for the year to 19,869.
