Three charged over assaults on emergency workers after Gosport migrant-boat protest

Shannon Dodds, 32, and Sally Pearson, 31, were remanded ahead of Portsmouth Magistrates' Court on Thursday; Toby Matthews, 33, was bailed to November after a protest in Gosport over a Channel migrant boat.

Three people have been charged with assaulting emergency workers after a migrant boat protest in Gosport, Hampshire.

Officers from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary policed a peaceful protest in the town on Tuesday; six people were arrested. On Wednesday the force said three had been charged.

Shannon Dodds, 32, of Gosport, was charged with two counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker. Sally Pearson, 31, of Gosport, was charged with assault by beating of an emergency worker and a racially aggravated public order offence. Both were remanded in custody to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Toby Matthews, 33, of Forton Road, Gosport, was charged with common assault of an emergency worker, bailed to appear at the same court on 9 November.

A 19-year-old man and a 36-year-old man from Salisbury, arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespass, were bailed with conditions until 22 December while inquiries continue. A 67-year-old man from Gosport was handed a fixed penalty notice for driving without due care and attention.

Hundreds of activists had gathered at the marina on Tuesday after the far-right campaigner Daniel Thomas, known as Danny Tommo, filmed himself trying to intercept a dinghy carrying dozens of migrants (see our earlier report). The vessel instead docked at Dover, Kent, at about 12.30am on Wednesday, after the 51 migrants on board reportedly refused help from a French ship and spent more than 30 hours at sea.
