Mark Cain, 45, appeared at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday charged with the murder of his wife, GP Dr Hannah Terry, found dead at the family home in the early hours of Sunday.

The 45-year-old doctor, who worked at Grimston Medical Centre in King’s Lynn, was found in an upstairs bedroom of the house on Fern Hill, Dersingham — just over a mile from Sandringham Estate — after the ambulance service called police at about 2.25am. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and Norfolk Police opened a murder investigation.

Prosecutor Jackie Hanlon told the court a post-mortem had found a blunt-force injury to the right side of her head and an injury suggestive of compression of the neck. The hearing was told children were present in the property at the time.

Cain, held at the King’s Lynn investigation centre for more than two days before being charged on Tuesday afternoon, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address. He entered no plea and was remanded in custody ahead of a preliminary hearing at King’s Lynn Crown Court on Thursday. The Crown Prosecution Service, which authorised the charge, has warned that reporting must not prejudice the proceedings.

The Sun reported Dr Terry served in a pool of GPs available to the Royal Family at Sandringham and had treated senior royals including Queen Camilla — a claim not confirmed by Norfolk Police or the CPS. Sources cited by the paper said the King and Queen had been informed of her death.

Police have released no motive. Det Insp Alix Wright said the investigation is at an early stage, and the family has asked for privacy.
