King will not apologise for slave trade on Caribbean tour, Palace confirms
Buckingham Palace has confirmed the King will express sorrow but offer no formal apology or reparations for Britain's role in the transatlantic slave trade during his nine-day Caribbean tour.

The King will not apologise for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade when he tours the Caribbean later this month, Buckingham Palace has confirmed, despite mounting calls for reparations from regional leaders.
Details of the nine-day tour, released by the Palace, show Charles will visit the Bahamas from 27 to 29 October, then Guyana from 29 to 30 October, before Queen Camilla joins him in Antigua and Barbuda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting from 1 to 4 November.
A senior Palace aide said that while the King would “not shy away from the darkest days of our past”, questions over an apology and reparations were “matters for governments to address”, The Times reported. The concern is that a formal apology could be interpreted as an acknowledgement that international obligations were breached.
Campaigners in the Bahamas, where the King remains head of state, have warned him “not to come empty-handed”, and the Bahamas National Reparations Committee has requested a meeting. The Palace is braced for a difficult audience with Guyana’s president, who has called on European countries to “do the morally right thing”.
The UK government’s position remains unchanged: it has described the slave trade as abhorrent but ruled out financial compensation. Royal officials note the King acts on ministerial advice and has previously called slavery an “atrocity” that “forever stains our history”.
The tour comes just weeks after Antigua and Barbuda dropped its oath of allegiance to the King, replacing him as head of state in favour of a pledge to the nation.
