Burnham confirms Manchester will host G20 summit in November 2027

Andy Burnham has confirmed Manchester Central will host the G20 leaders' summit on 27–28 November 2027, with Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping among the leaders invited.

World leaders including Donald Trump will head to Manchester next year after the UK confirmed the city will host the 2027 G20 leaders’ summit on 27 and 28 November at the Manchester Central Convention Centre.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham made the announcement as he prepared to travel to New York for his first United Nations General Assembly as prime minister, according to a statement from his office on Monday. The decision to choose Manchester — a former railway station complex in the heart of the city — was taken before Burnham entered Downing Street, but the prime minister, who led Greater Manchester as mayor for almost a decade, has championed the city since taking power, establishing a No 10 North operation there.

Invitations will be extended to all G20 members, including Vladimir Putin’s Russia despite the diplomatic strains over the invasion of Ukraine, with China’s Xi Jinping and Argentina’s Javier Milei also expected to be invited, the Press Association reports. The UK takes over the G20 presidency from the US in December, after this year’s leaders’ summit at Trump’s Trump National Doral Miami golf resort.

The announcement sets up a striking personal subplot. Burnham is due to meet Trump for the first time on Tuesday in New York — months after Trump dismissed him in June as “the mayor of a town”. Burnham later told reporters that in his first phone call with the president he replied: “Manchester isn’t ‘some town’… this is Manchester”. When he was mayor, Burnham told the Manchester Evening News he “wouldn’t welcome” a Trump visit; he now says “politicians say things throughout their career, but now the important thing is to focus on the moment you are in”.

Garry Bridges, the new leader of Manchester City Council, told the BBC the event would have been “unthinkable a couple of years ago” and said he hoped it would change Trump’s perception of the city. Downing Street said preparations will now step up, with hundreds of local people expected to be involved, and other G20 events staged across the UK during Britain’s year-long presidency. The UK last hosted the G20 in London in 2009, when the security operation was estimated at £7.2m.
