National Grid issues tight-supply warning for Monday evening peak

The National Energy System Operator has issued an electricity margin notice for 16:00 to 19:00 BST on Monday, citing a 1.4GW system margin as evening peak demand approaches.

Britain’s electricity grid operator has warned that power supply margins will be tight during Monday evening’s peak demand period, asking generators to have more capacity ready.

The National Energy System Operator (NESO) issued an electricity margin notice covering 16:00 to 19:00 BST on Monday 28 September, citing a 1.4GW system margin, MNI reported. Reuters also carried the notice, headlined “Britain’s electricity grid operator issues margin notice for Monday 1600-1900 BST”.

Margin notices are industry alerts that allow the grid operator to request additional generating capacity if needed. They do not signal that blackouts are expected.

Bloomberg reported that the operator had warned of a possible 1.4GW shortfall from 16:00 and had requested additional capacity from neighbouring countries, while asking British suppliers whether they could find ways to reduce demand, in a report recapped by Izvestia.

The operator described the measure as planned and preventive, saying there was no risk to electricity supply for consumers and that the system remained secure.

The warning lands days before Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s pledge to abolish a 5% tax on electricity bills from 1 October takes effect, part of his package of previously announced cost-of-living measures.
