Teddy Young, 24, has appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court charged with two offences under the National Security Act and been remanded in custody to the Old Bailey, where he is due to appear on October 16.

The Royal Navy sailor faces one charge under section 1 of the Act — obtaining, copying, recording or retaining protected information intending to benefit a foreign power — and one under section 18, of engaging in conduct in preparation for disclosing protected information. The alleged offences ran between November 2024 and May 2025.

Young, an able seaman who joined as a Warfare Intelligence Rating with developed vetting in April 2024, spoke only to confirm his name and age at the short hearing; he was not asked to enter any pleas. His mother watched from the public gallery.

Alex Rose, defending, told the court there would be no bail application. Prosecutor Rebecca Waller outlined the arrest. District Judge Annabel Pilling sent the case to the Central Criminal Court.

Counter-terrorism police arrested Young at his Bedfordshire home on Tuesday, having first arrested him in Hampshire and suspended him from duty roughly a year ago. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest is not connected to the RAF Fairford investigation. Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said the force had worked to “ensure appropriate measures could be taken to mitigate any potential risks linked to this matter”.

This follows this morning’s charge story.
