Ministers will this week announce a blitz on anti-social behaviour by transport users, with councils set to be given new powers to fine people £100 who vape, drop rubbish or carry out threatening behaviour on buses in their area, The Sun on Sunday reports.

A Whitehall source told the paper: “The Government knows that anti-social behaviour is a nightmare for people who experience it. So they are planning a crackdown to show they are on the public’s side.”

The planned announcement comes as the latest Crime Survey for England and Wales shows 41 per cent of Brits experienced or saw anti-social behaviour in the past year — up six per cent on a year before.

The move also follows action already taken against vaping: from October 29, vape vending machines will be illegal across the UK, making it an offence for businesses such as pubs to have one on their premises. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has already vowed to crack down on vape shops blighting Britain’s high streets, according to the Sun.

The paper says the new fines would give councils direct enforcement powers over conduct on bus services in their areas, although ministers have not yet confirmed the plans on the record.
