UK and Germany to launch joint partnership against sabotage and cyberattacks

Britain and Germany will launch a joint partnership to counter sabotage and cyberattacks as Prime Minister Andy Burnham meets Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin on Thursday, with both leaders warning of the hybrid threat from Russia.

Britain and Germany will launch a joint partnership to counter sabotage and cyberattacks, Downing Street has announced, as Prime Minister Andy Burnham meets German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin on Thursday.

The partnership will involve sharing information and coordinating action to monitor, deter and disrupt threats to critical infrastructure, whether through cyberattacks or sabotage, according to Downing Street.

London says adversaries, “especially Russia”, pose a hybrid threat in Europe and beyond. British ministers were last month due to brief defence companies and critical national infrastructure providers on the threat posed by Russia.

The announcement follows warnings from both sides. Germany’s head of foreign intelligence said on Monday that the confrontation with Russia had taken on “a new, more dangerous dimension”. Last month, Germany concluded that Russia was responsible for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in August.

Burnham’s visit to Berlin comes as the UK continues to rebuild post-Brexit security ties with European allies, with countering hybrid threats now a central pillar of the bilateral relationship.
