The US Embassy in London has issued a security alert for American citizens in the UK after several men were arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act near RAF Fairford, warning US-linked facilities face heightened risk.
The United States Embassy in London has issued a security alert for American citizens in the UK following the arrest of several men on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act near RAF Fairford, the US-operated airbase in Gloucestershire.
In a security advisory released on Sunday, the US Mission said: “The U.S. Embassy is aware of arrests on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act near the Royal Air Force base in Fairford, UK. U.S. citizens are encouraged to exercise caution and be mindful of personal security. Local authorities are evacuating certain residents in the area out of an abundance of caution.”
The embassy reminded citizens that UK authorities assess the national terrorism threat as “severe” and warned that “U.S.-associated facilities, gatherings, and organisations may be at heightened risk.” Americans were advised to strictly follow instructions from local emergency services, remain vigilant, and register with the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for real-time notices.
Five men were arrested in the early hours of Sunday after reports of three suspicious vehicles travelling towards the base. Bomb-disposal teams examined the vehicles and nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution.
RAF Fairford, owned by the UK and operated by the US Air Force, hosts the 501st Combat Support Wing and has been used by American bombers for strikes on Iranian missile sites.
