African Union delegation meets Congo rebels, calls for continued peace efforts
An African Union delegation led by former presidents Uhuru Kenyatta, Sahle-Work Zewde and Mokgweetsi Masisi met AFC/M23 leaders in Goma on Monday, urging respect for the Doha ceasefire commitments as fighting continues in eastern Congo.

An African Union delegation has called for continued engagement in the peace process after meeting leaders of the AFC/M23 rebel movement in Goma on Monday.
The delegation — former Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta, former Ethiopian president Sahle-Work Zewde and former Botswana president Mokgweetsi Masisi — held talks with AFC/M23 political coordinator Corneille Nangaa and his deputies Bertrand Bisimwa and Fred Kaniki, the African Union said in a statement on Wednesday. The rebels were described by Reuters as Rwanda-backed; the meeting was part of consultations under the Doha peace process (The New Times).
The AU statement called for respect of commitments made in Doha, adherence to the ceasefire and cooperation with verification mechanisms, while stressing the need to protect civilians and ensure safe humanitarian access, Reuters reported.
The rebels control large areas of North and South Kivu provinces captured during a lightning offensive last year. Congo’s government and the AFC/M23 signed a declaration in Doha in July 2025 committing to a permanent ceasefire and negotiations towards a broader peace agreement — but progress has been limited, with the release of detainees in August and the deployment of ceasefire-observation teams, according to Reuters.
Fighting has continued, with recent clashes concentrated in remote parts of South Kivu’s highlands and North Kivu’s Masisi territory. Parallel mediation efforts involving Congo and Rwanda, led by the United States and the African Union, have so far brought little change on the ground.
The delegation met Rwanda’s foreign minister on Tuesday and is expected in Kinshasa for consultations with the Congolese government (Reuters; ChimpReports).
