Kashmiri filmmaker Arfat Sheikh detained by ICE at Dulles airport
US officials confirmed Arfat Sheikh's arrest after the Kashmiri filmmaker was detained by ICE stepping off a flight at Dulles airport; an immigration judge granted bond on 6 October, with supporters expecting his release the following day.
Kashmiri filmmaker Arfat Sheikh, 42, has been detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement after being taken into custody stepping off a flight from California at Washington Dulles International Airport on 24 September.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed on Wednesday that Sheikh was arrested on 24 September. DHS said he entered the US legally on a student visa in 2019 to study film, overstayed his lawful admission, and filed for asylum in 2020, adding that a pending application does not confer legal status. He will receive due process, the department said.
Supporters dispute the detention. The Free Arfat Sheikh campaign says he has a pending immigration application and authorisation to work and live in the US, and his friends allege ICE agents took him into custody without a warrant despite him presenting his immigration paperwork. The campaign has called the detention unlawful — a claim DHS has not addressed directly.
Sheikh, the director of the award-winning feature Saffron Kingdom, was travelling with author Tara Dorabji to an “Art as Resistance” panel in Washington DC. He was held at the Caroline Detention Facility in Bowling Green, Virginia.
He appeared before an immigration judge on Tuesday 6 October. Kashmir Times reported that bond was granted and deposited, with supporters expecting his release the following day — though no confirmation of a release has surfaced since.
