Military aircraft carrying four Marines bursts into flames in North Carolina

An MV-22B Osprey carrying four Marines burst into flames and hard-landed in the Bladen Lakes State Forest area of North Carolina on Thursday morning during a training exercise, Bladen County Sheriff Jim McVicker told WECT. All four people on board were taken for medical evaluation after the “aviation mishap”, the Marine Corps said in a statement. One Marine suffered burns and was rushed to a nearby clinic for treatment, White Lake Fire Chief Dale Brennan told WECT. The Osprey belongs to the Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron and was based out of Air Station New River, the Marine Corps added, saying civilian and military emergency services responded to the site. Brennan said multiple fire crews attended the scene and that the aircraft had roughly 6,000 pounds of jet fuel on board. The incident remains under investigation, the Marine Corps said. Air Station New River had training exercises planned this week, with neighbouring Camp Lejeune having warned local residents to expect increased emergency response activity.
