Officer critically hurt in Yom Kippur shootout outside Belleville synagogue

A police officer was critically wounded in an exchange of gunfire outside the Sons of Jacob synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, on Sunday evening as about two dozen worshippers gathered inside for Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit said a 29-year-old man arrived in a truck around 7pm armed with a shotgun and opened fire on an officer stationed outside the synagogue. The officer returned fire before a second officer arrived and also fired; investigators estimate between 20 and 30 shots were fired in total. Belleville Police deputy chief Sheri Meeks identified the suspect as Sean Ward of nearby Quinte West, who is in hospital in life-threatening condition.

The wounded officer, 13-year veteran Constable Jeff Smith, is critically injured and faces “a significant road to recovery”, Meeks said, adding that his condition had stabilised in intensive care. No one inside the synagogue was hurt; congregant Douglas Lobel said the gunfire lasted two or three minutes and called Smith “a hero who saved our lives”.

Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the attack, writing that “Jewish people must be able to worship safely”, and Ontario premier Doug Ford also praised the officer. The SIU is investigating the police response while Belleville police investigate the shooter’s motive; officials said on Monday there was no forensic confirmation yet that the synagogue itself was struck.
