Search continues for man overboard from Carnival Panorama off Mexico

A search remains underway off the coast of Mexico for a 56-year-old man who went overboard from the Carnival Panorama on Saturday 19 September, while the ship was sailing from Puerto Vallarta to Long Beach, California.

Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the incident on Saturday, saying in a statement that “a male guest aboard Carnival Panorama” went overboard on the final full day of the sailing. The cruise line told the New York Post that the ship’s team initiated search procedures, reviewed CCTV footage and notified both the US and Mexican Coast Guards.

Announcements seeking a missing guest began at about 11am on Saturday, Cruise Hive reported, citing a passenger aboard. The ship turned around mid-afternoon and at about 3.30pm passengers were told to return to their staterooms for a shipwide search. About 5pm the captain confirmed that camera footage showed the guest had gone overboard; the ship resumed its voyage at roughly 4.30pm and docked in Long Beach on Sunday morning 20 September.

The US Coast Guard said on 21 September that fixed-wing aircraft had been launched and that it was coordinating with the Mexican Navy and commercial vessels in the area, with the search ongoing, PEOPLE reported. The man’s identity has not been released, and nothing about the circumstances has been made public. Carnival said it is supporting the family travelling with him.
