Catalonia on red alert as 'mini-hurricane' storm system threatens 200 litres of rain

Seventeen Catalan counties are on maximum red alert as a mesoscale storm system threatens 200+ litres of rain; President Illa warns of a 'very complex' situation.

Catalonia was placed on maximum red alert on Saturday as an exceptional storm system threatened to dump more than 200 litres of rain per square metre on the Spanish Mediterranean coast, with forecasters warning of a possible “Mediterranean mini-hurricane”.

Meteocat, the regional weather service, said a mesoscale convective system — a large organised cluster of storms — could form off the coast, bringing torrential downpours, hail, strong gusts, tornadoes and waterspouts. The period of greatest risk runs from 8pm on Saturday to 2pm on Sunday.

Seventeen coastal and pre-coastal counties are under the highest danger level, including Barcelonès, Maresme, Tarragonès and Baix Camp. Civil Protection planned to send ES-Alert messages to mobile phones, urging residents to avoid non-essential travel and stay away from rivers, streams and flood-prone areas.

President Salvador Illa warned Catalonia faced a “very complex” situation, telling citizens: “This is not a joke.” Meteocat director Sarai Sarroca said the situation “can complicate a lot”.

The alert follows Friday’s storms, which killed a 102-year-old woman in Madrigueras, Castilla-La Mancha, where floodwaters rose about a metre inside her home, regional authorities said. In Valencia, authorities recorded 237 weather-related incidents, and firefighters in Tarragona rescued about 20 people trapped in vehicles.
