The firing ran between 2.20pm and 3.30pm near the Indo-Myanmar border, police told the Indian Express; PTI said militants fired several rounds at the Kuki village at around 2.30pm, triggering an exchange of fire with a local armed group that a senior officer said was still underway that evening.
The dead man was Seikhohao Haokip, 35 — named as Seikhohou, 36, in the PTI police account — reported by one outlet as known locally as a YouTuber. Among the injured were Chassad village head Thangjahou Haokip, 48, and Seipao Haokip, chief of Phungtha; exact name lists vary across reports. The injured were taken to hospital — the Indian Express reporting the 11 Assam Rifles hospital, India Today NE an Army camp in Chassad.
A column of Assam Rifles, the Border Security Force and Kamjong police was deployed to bring the situation under control, police said.
The Committee on Tribal Unity, a Kuki-Zo group, condemned the attack and urged the Centre to deploy central forces to the area.
The Chassad Village Authority alleged Naga armed groups were behind it, calling it the tenth such incident since tensions escalated this year — attributions that remain unverified. Official sources said the identities of those involved and the motive remain unclear.
It comes amid Kuki-Naga clashes since February in which more than 50 people have been killed and dozens of houses burnt, according to PTI.
