Christa Pike in critical condition after botched execution as lawyers demand commutation
Christa Pike remains in critical condition at a Nashville hospital more than 28 hours after surviving two doses of lethal-injection drugs; her lawyers call it "chemical torture" and demand Governor Bill Lee commute her sentence immediately.

Christa Pike, 50, is in critical condition at a Nashville hospital, receiving what her lawyers call “life-saving medical care” more than 28 hours after surviving two doses of lethal-injection drugs at Tennessee’s Riverbend Maximum Security Institution.
Lawyer Randall Spivey told reporters on Thursday: “We don’t have much sense of her prognosis but we do know that she is alive right now and receiving lifesaving medical care.” Spivey demanded Lee commute her sentence, saying she had endured “chemical torture” and “punishment greater than any other person in the history of the American death penalty”.
Lawyers say at least seven needles were used over an hour as staff struggled to establish intravenous lines; Spivey said Pike’s right arm “turned purple” and blistered. Witnesses heard her snoring as they left.
Lee, who denied clemency on Monday, suspended all Tennessee executions for the rest of 2026 and ordered a “comprehensive, third-party review”, calling it “a tragedy” and “deeply disturbing”. The Department of Correction said it “followed every step of the state’s lawful, established execution protocol”.
Death Penalty Information Center director Robin Maher called it “singular and unparalleled”; Pike appears to be the first known person to have survived after execution drugs entered her body. It is Tennessee’s second failed lethal injection this year, putting Gary Wayne Sutton’s 3 December execution in doubt.
Pike was sentenced to death in the 1990s for a murder she committed at 18 in 1995; she would have been the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years.
