Columbus police say a fatal shooting on Monday afternoon near the Alrahma Mosque on the city’s Northeast Side was not an attack on the mosque and had nothing to do with a funeral taking place inside.

Police received a report of a shooting at 2:11 p.m. in the 2200 block of Albert Avenue, a few hundred feet from the mosque at 2205 Albert Ave., northeast of downtown Columbus, according to a police dispatcher. The caller reported a group of boys shooting outside the mosque.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene by Columbus Division of Fire medics, according to Columbus Fire Lt. Nick Davis.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Columbus also responded after an initial report of a shooting at the mosque, the ATF said in a post on X.

At a hastily assembled news conference near the scene, Columbus police spokesman Sgt. James Fuqua said the shooting stemmed from a dispute at a nearby apartment complex and involved two groups of people. “We want to make it clear this was not an attack on the mosque,” he said, adding that a funeral was under way inside but the shooting had nothing to do with it. He could not say whether there were other injuries or suspects being sought.

Neither the police, the ATF nor the mosque immediately provided further information.
