Magnitude 4.9 earthquake strikes Uttarakhand's Chamoli; strong tremors felt across Delhi-NCR
A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck Chamoli in Uttarakhand on Tuesday night, with strong tremors shaking Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad; no casualties or major damage were reported.

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Tuesday night, with strong tremors felt across Delhi-NCR, India’s National Center for Seismology (NCS) said.
The quake struck at 22:23:13 IST (21:53 PKT), with its epicentre at 30.103°N, 79.561°E at a depth of 13 km in Chamoli, according to the NCS. The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre put the magnitude slightly higher at 5.1, at a depth of 10 km.
The tremors were strong enough to be noticed across Delhi, with residents reporting brief shaking and stepping outside their homes in some areas. Reports said the shaking was also felt in Noida and Ghaziabad. One resident of Safdarjung Enclave in South Delhi reported feeling their entire couch move, NDTV said.
The NCS confirmation came at around 10:40 pm IST, after residents had already flooded social media wondering whether others had felt the tremors too.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage, according to initial reports, and authorities are continuing to assess the situation. Uttarakhand sits in the seismically active Himalayan belt, and quakes originating there are frequently felt far away in the capital region.
Earlier on Tuesday, a separate magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck Assam’s Nagaon district at 4:23 am IST at a depth of 33 km, the NCS said, with no casualties or major damage reported there either.
