Boston-bound Delta flight diverts to Porto after smoke reported in cabin
Delta flight DL251 from Barcelona to Boston declared an emergency over the Atlantic and diverted to Porto after smoke was reported in the cabin; eight passengers were treated on the tarmac and three taken to hospital.
Delta Air Lines flight DL251, en route from Barcelona to Boston, made an emergency landing in Porto on Sunday afternoon after smoke was reported in the cabin, the airline and Portuguese authorities said.
The Airbus A330 was diverted to Porto following a reported mechanical issue and landed safely, Delta said. Tracking data cited by Reuters suggested the aircraft left Barcelona at 3:15pm (1315 GMT) and landed in Porto at 5:45pm (1645 GMT).
Eight passengers were treated on the tarmac at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto, while three others were taken to hospital for treatment, a spokesperson for Portugal’s emergency and civil protection authority told Reuters by phone. The spokesperson said the forced landing was due to smoke in the cabin.
Aviation tracker AirLive reported the crew transmitted a squawk 7700 emergency code while turning back over the Atlantic, and that Delta had rescheduled the onward leg to Boston for Monday afternoon, with two connected flights cancelled.
There was no immediate official word on the number of passengers or crew on board, or on the exact cause of the reported smoke.
