27,000 turkeys to be culled on Lolland after second Denmark bird flu outbreak in a week
A flock of 27,000 turkeys on Lolland is to be culled on Monday after highly pathogenic avian influenza was found there, Denmark's second confirmed poultry outbreak in a few days after about 40,000 turkeys were culled in Slagelse.
A flock of 27,000 turkeys on Lolland, a Danish island, is to be culled on Monday after highly pathogenic avian influenza was found there, Denmark’s food authority said in a press release, according to Sweden Herald, citing the TT News Agency.
The Lolland outbreak is the second confirmed outbreak in a few days, Sweden Herald reported. Bird flu was confirmed last Friday in Slagelse Municipality on Zealand, and approximately 40,000 turkeys were culled there on Saturday. The Slagelse figure is a separate outbreak, not the Lolland flock: the two counts must not be added together or swapped.
Copenhagen Daily’s Monday edition independently reported the same Lolland development, stating that the 27,000-turkey flock is to be culled today after highly contagious bird flu was found there, and describing it as the second outbreak in a week.
“At this time of year, it is especially important that everyone who keeps poultry or other birds does everything they can to prevent contact between their animals and wild birds,” Mette Kirkeskov Sie, head of unit at the authority, said in the press release, according to Sweden Herald. The first cases of avian influenza are usually discovered in the autumn, when migratory birds pass over Denmark, Sweden Herald reported.
No human cases or wider restrictions are reported in either source for the Lolland outbreak, and this story makes no claim about them.
