Britain removes East Jerusalem consulate signage as Israeli shutdown deadline passes

Reuters journalists watched workers remove the "British Consulate General" plaque from Britain's East Jerusalem mission on Thursday as Israel's 30-day closure order expired, though the Union flag still flew over the building.

Workers at Britain’s consulate in East Jerusalem removed the plaque reading “British Consulate General” and a second sign for the mission’s consular section overnight, Reuters journalists saw on Thursday, as Israel’s 30-day order to shut the mission expired (https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/britain-removes-east-jerusalem-consulate-signage-israeli-shutdown-order-expires-2026-10-08/). The Union flag was still flying over the building, and the consulate had no immediate comment (https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/britain-removes-east-jerusalem-consulate-signage-israeli-shutdown-order-expires-2026-10-08/).

Israel ordered Britain on 8 September to close the consulate within 30 days and remove its diplomats from the city, after London announced sanctions targeting Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, including a trade ban on goods made there (https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/britain-removes-east-jerusalem-consulate-signage-israeli-shutdown-order-expires-2026-10-08/). The closure order affects around 30 British diplomats and their family members, sources have said (https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/britain-removes-east-jerusalem-consulate-signage-israeli-shutdown-order-expires-2026-10-08/).

Britain’s Foreign Office declined on Wednesday to say whether the consulate was still operating or whether any diplomats working there had returned to the UK (https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/britain-removes-east-jerusalem-consulate-signage-israeli-shutdown-order-expires-2026-10-08/). The consulate, in East Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood, handles Britain’s relations with Palestinians in the city, the West Bank and Gaza, and provides consular services to Palestinians; the closure order does not affect Britain’s embassy in Tel Aviv (https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/britain-removes-east-jerusalem-consulate-signage-israeli-shutdown-order-expires-2026-10-08/). Britain, whose presence in the city dates back almost 200 years, is considering expelling Israeli diplomats from Israel’s London embassy in response (https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/britain-removes-east-jerusalem-consulate-signage-israeli-shutdown-order-expires-2026-10-08/), as reported by Flip News on 5 October (https://flipnews.co.uk/world/uk-expel-27-israeli-diplomats-consulate-threat/). Al Jazeera confirmed the plaque removal, citing Reuters journalists on the scene (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/8/signage-at-uk-consulate-in-east-jerusalem-removed-as-israels-deadline-over).
