Eleven people died and eight others were seriously injured after a minibus taxi and a heavy motor vehicle collided head-on on the N2 near Mtubatuba in northern KwaZulu-Natal early on Sunday morning.

SABC News reports that the crash happened on the N2 southbound in KwaManandi, in the Mtubatuba area. Eight of the survivors sustained serious burn wounds. The minibus taxi caught fire after the collision, trapping passengers inside, according to The Witness, a KwaZulu-Natal newspaper.
It is believed the occupants of the minibus taxi were returning from a Maskandi festival in eMpangeni when the collision occurred.
Road traffic authorities cautioned that both lanes of the N2 were completely blocked on Sunday morning, with emergency services at the scene. No further details on the identities of the victims or the exact cause of the crash had been released by authorities.
