FDA sugar recall of 1.7 million pounds classified Class II over possible wheat contamination

Nearly 1.7 million pounds of sugar sold under well-known brands including Target’s Good & Gather label have been recalled in the United States over possible wheat kernel contamination, posing a risk to people with wheat allergies.

The recall, initiated by Minneapolis-based United Sugar Producers and Refiners, was classified by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as Class II on September 21, 2026. A Class II classification applies when a product may cause temporary or medically reversible health effects, although the likelihood of serious harm is considered remote.

The affected products are light brown sugar and powdered sugar sold under the Good & Gather, United and Crystal Sugar brands. According to the FDA enforcement record, the recall covers roughly 1.27 million pounds of light brown sugar and 426,500 pounds of powdered sugar.

The products were distributed in eight states — Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas — in both consumer-sized and commercial packages. The listed Good & Gather items are sold in 2-pound bags: light brown sugar (batch numbers MHD26223 through MHD26229) and powdered sugar (batch numbers MHD26223 through MHD26229). Also covered are United 50-pound light brown sugar bags, United 6X 50-pound powdered sugar bags and Crystal Sugar 25-pound powdered sugar bags, with batch codes running from MHD26223 through MHD26229 for most items and MHD26230 for the Crystal Sugar powdered sugar.

The recall began on August 19, 2026, according to the FDA enforcement record, and remains ongoing. Wheat is one of the nine major food allergens recognised by the FDA, making the contamination a particular concern for people with wheat allergies or celiac disease.

Consumers are advised to check the brand, product, package size and batch number on any brown or powdered sugar at home rather than assuming every package of a given brand is affected. Anyone with a matching package should not use it and should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall.

The action is being conducted with the knowledge of the FDA.
