Gilgit-Baltistan police foil terrorist attack on checkpost between Diamer and Ghizer

Gilgit-Baltistan police foiled a terrorist attack on a police checkpost situated between Diamer and Ghizer districts on Saturday, a police spokesperson said in a statement on Sunday, Dawn reports.

The spokesperson said around nine terrorists opened fire on a police party at the Sargah Nallah seasonal checkpost, which is located within the jurisdiction of the Singal police station, adjacent to Ghizer and Diamer districts.

Police personnel immediately mounted an effective retaliatory response, the spokesperson said, and the attackers fled, taking advantage of the difficult mountainous terrain and their higher position.

“All police personnel remained safe in the firing,” the spokesperson stated.

According to the statement, steps are being taken to relocate the police party to a safer and strategically suitable location, and to provide additional personnel, logistics and equipment. The situation is being monitored at the district level, the spokesperson added.

The spokesperson said the GB police strongly condemned “this cowardly terrorist attack” and reiterated its resolve to fulfil its responsibilities for maintaining law and order, protecting the lives and property of the public, and combating terrorism. The spokesperson urged people to report suspicious activities.

The incident comes months after an ambush near Thore Valley in Chilas. In April this year, GB police arrested 15 suspects during a combing operation after at least three police personnel were martyred and five others wounded in that attack, Dawn reports.
