Stevens will become the 37th governor of South Australia, with King Charles confirming the appointment. “I’m very grateful that His Majesty King Charles has confirmed that Mr Stevens will become the next governor,” Malinauskas said. “He will be sworn in on Wednesday the 9th of December.” (ABC)

Adamson’s five-year term as governor expires on Tuesday, having been appointed in 2021. Stevens has served as police commissioner since 2015 and was the state’s coordinator during the COVID-19 pandemic. He will formally step down as commissioner on October 23, with Deputy Commissioner Linda Williams taking the role in an acting capacity; Stevens had one year and nine months remaining on his contract. “I think it probably goes without saying that I was deeply honoured when the Premier first spoke to me about my preparedness to take over as the next governor,” Stevens said. He joined the police academy in 1982 at the age of 17. (ABC)
