A paddy-laden truck ploughed into devotees gathered near the Sheetla Mata Temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, in the early hours of Sunday, killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens more, police said.

The incident occurred at around 1.30am local time, when the truck — travelling from the Chhinor direction — descended a steep slope where heavy vehicles are restricted, Gwalior Senior Superintendent of Police Dharmveer Singh told news agency ANI. The vehicle broke through police barricades, ran over pilgrims on the road, and crashed into the temple’s outer wall and gate, causing significant damage.

“This is a tragic incident where pilgrims were travelling to Sheetla Mata Temple in large numbers,” Singh said. “The devotees who were on the road were crushed underneath it, leading to this accident.”

A total of 39 people were taken to hospital, of whom 12 died. Five to six of the injured are in critical condition with fractures, while others sustained minor injuries, the SSP said. Two police personnel on duty at the spot were also injured.

Gwalior Collector Ruchika Chauhan said ambulances and other vehicles were dispatched promptly after the accident was reported. She said a police checkpoint and a stopper had been in place during Navratri, and an investigation was under way into how the truck entered the restricted road. An RTO team was inspecting the vehicle to determine why it veered to the left.

An eyewitness told ANI: “This occurred at around 1am. I saw some people die on the spot. The truck was overloaded; it came suddenly and ran over some shops and people.”
