Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 15 years in prison in New York on 23 September 2026 for the 2006 sexual assault of Miriam Haley, following a retrial after his 2020 conviction was overturned.

Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in New York for the 2006 sexual assault of former production assistant Miriam “Mimi” Haley, following a retrial of the case that ignited the #MeToo movement.

Justice Curtis Farber handed down the sentence in a Manhattan state court on Wednesday 23 September, the Associated Press reported. The 74-year-old appeared in a wheelchair, according to the New York Post, after prosecutors sought 20 years and his lawyers asked for nine, Page Six reported.

Addressing the court, Weinstein said: “I am not a perfect person. I am a person who has made mistakes,” adding: “I am not a violent man. I ask for mercy.” He told Haley: “I really do have remorse for Miriam Haley.”

Haley, 49, read a victim impact statement alongside her lawyer Gloria Allred, saying Weinstein “abused his position and power” and caused a “devastating effect on my life and security”. “It is a life sentence for me,” she added, per NBC News.

The sentence will be followed by five years of supervised release and a requirement to register as a sex offender.

Weinstein was first convicted in 2020 and jailed for 23 years, but New York’s Court of Appeals overturned the verdict in April 2024; a jury found him guilty again in June 2025. He is also due to be resentenced in California after an appeals court in June upheld his rape conviction but vacated his 16-year term, AFP reported.
