Imran Khan's sisters' detention extended by another 30 days, Lahore High Court told

The Punjab government has extended the detention of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan’s sisters — Aleema Khan, Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi — by another 30 days, the Lahore High Court (LHC) was told on Monday.

A government lawyer submitted a report prepared by the Punjab home secretary to the court in connection with a petition seeking the release of the three sisters, Geo News reported.

Aleema Khan was detained under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960, on September 20 in Lahore and shifted to Kot Lakhpat jail. Her sisters, Noreen Niazi and Uzma Khan, were detained under the same provision a day later, following a recommendation from police.

The detentions came ahead of the PTI’s planned nationwide protest, including a long march on Islamabad on September 27, to demand Imran Khan’s release and the supremacy of the Constitution.

Aleema Khan’s son, Shahrez Khan, filed a petition in the LHC on October 20 challenging the detention of the three sisters. At an earlier hearing, the petitioner’s counsel told the court that the detention orders had expired on October 19 and 20, while the women remained in custody.

The government lawyer told the court on Monday that the deputy commissioner had sent a proposal recommending a further extension, and that the Punjab government had approved it and extended the detention of all three sisters by another 30 days.

The Punjab home secretary and the superintendent of Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail appeared before the court, and the court subsequently disposed of Shahrez Khan’s petition after reviewing the home secretary’s report, Geo News reported.
