Around 150 MPs of the opposition INDIA bloc marched from Parliament to the Election Commission of India headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over what they allege are irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls (https://www.timesnownews.com/india/breaking-news-live-sir-row-cec-controversy-india-bloc-cjp-protests-us-iran-war-russia-ukraine-latest-update-oil-prices-geopolitics-liveblog-156256213).

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee were among those who joined the march, which set off from Makar Dwar around 11 am after MPs assembled there at 10.30 am (https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/cec-row-protest-against-gyanesh-kumar-india-bloc-march-election-commission-sir-issue-live-updates-october-6-2026/article71549790.ece). Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Supriya Sule and Jaya Bachchan also took part.

The march was stopped by security personnel near the NITI Aayog office, where Samajwadi Party MPs climbed police barricades; Rahul Gandhi and other MPs then staged a sit-in near the EC office, with Bhadouria vowing the protest would continue until Kumar resigns. Delhi Police had sealed the area with five-layer barricades and tear gas shells, blocking Raisina Road (https://www.timesnownews.com/india/5-layer-barricades-tear-gas-shells-how-delhi-police-is-preparing-for-opposition-protest-march-article-156282255).

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh said opposition MPs would organise district-level pad-yatras until October 8 as part of the wider campaign, while AAP said it would not join the march and would fight its own battle separately (https://thenewsmill.com/2026/10/india-bloc-mps-march-to-election-commission-over-chief-dispute/). The Biju Janata Dal’s MPs joined the march at the direction of Naveen Patnaik.
