India condemns Pakistan's airstrikes on Afghanistan

India strongly condemned Pakistan’s airstrikes on Afghanistan on Tuesday, saying the strikes in Kunar and Paktika provinces had killed several civilians and vitiated regional peace and security.

Speaking at his bi-weekly media briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said: “We strongly condemn the attacks from Pakistan, the airstrikes which were launched on Afghanistan in their Kunar and Paktika provinces. In these airstrikes, several civilians have been killed.”

Jaiswal offered condolences on the “precious lives lost” and said India hoped those injured in the attack would “recover well and recover soon”.

“Such instances of aggression against a sovereign neighbour is something that goes against regional peace and security, it vitiates the regional peace and security, and it is yet again another occasion of aggression from the Pakistani side,” he said. He reaffirmed India’s “strong support, steadfast support for Afghanistan, for their independence, for their sovereignty, for their territorial integrity as also for the welfare and well-being of their people.”

Pakistan said on Monday its security forces had struck terrorist camps and hideouts in the border region, killing 28 terrorists, including multiple suicide bombers. The Afghan Taliban government said the strikes killed three civilians and wounded four: in Kunar, a woman and two men were killed and four injured, while in Paktika a house and a shop were hit with no casualties, according to Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid. Mujahid condemned the strikes as aggression and warned of an “appropriate response”. India has consistently advocated respect for Afghanistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
